on the christian calendar. it was an especially emotional day as pope benedict xvi makes one of his final appearances as the holy father. danielle nottingham reports for wjz from vatican city. >> thousands of faithful gave pope benedict xvi the long ovation near the end of ash wednesday mass. the applause only stopped when the pontiff said thank you, let's return to prayer. the 85-year-old holy father looked tired at times, during the lengthy mass. he was wheeled down the center aisle, when he left the packed basilica. many catholics were emotional, to see pope benedict celebrate mass in public. >> it was very beautiful, very moving and a great deal of affection, i think, that could be sensed in the congregation for him. it was amazing. i feel so lucky that we were here for this experience. >> reporter: tens of thousands of people are expected here at st. peter's square for the pope's final public appearance on february 27th, a day before he steps down. >> reporter: vatican officials say the pontiff does not expect big fanfare when he leaves. >> he's n
